Students of all abilities can find a place to thrive at Rochester Public Schools. Students at the Rochester Academy for Independent Living (RAIL), are preparing for a fulfilling and independent life after graduation. A key part of that journey is building confidence and celebrating each student’s unique identity. Between class periods, students find time to connect, express their personalities, and share their amazing talents. One of the ways they do this is through their talent shows.
Kristi Downs is a Developmental Cognitive Disability, Special Education Teacher at RAIL.
“We’ve been hosting talent shows since at least 2021, typically holding one to three each year. Students choose their own talents—most often singing and dancing—but we’ve also enjoyed unique acts like violin solos, pushups, basketball tricks, and juggling. Parents, caregivers, and outside providers are invited to attend and cheer on the performers. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our students, build their self-confidence, and help them develop valuable skills such as planning, practicing, and performing in front of an audience.”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This legislation is the foundation of RPS' commitment to whole-student support spanning all forms of ability. RPS programs, such as the Rochester Academy for Independent Living (RAIL), exemplify this commitment in action. Our staff members are incredible partners on this journey, dedicated to empowering students as they build skills, discover their strengths, and work toward their goals for an independent future.
