All students from Rochester Public Schools contribute positively to their communities, are lifelong learners, and have the skills to navigate their lives after high school.
School Counselor Mission Statement
The Rochester Public School Counseling Program teaches the knowledge and skills that lead to student empowerment in the areas of academic achievement, social/emotional development, and postsecondary preparation. The program promotes and enhances effective habits and mindsets through instruction and counseling by helping students find personal strengths and interests, develop effective decision-making skills, and increase their personal resiliency. Our comprehensive and data-driven approach increases equity, engagement, access and success for all RPS students by proactively delivering culturally-sustaining services directly with individuals, small groups, classrooms, and in the school as a whole. Our program advocates for students by cultivating strong relationships through collaboration and consultation between stakeholders within the school, community, and families of our students.
Note: In addition to helping students learn about their strengths, interests, habits, and mindsets, school counselors provide short-term counseling. If there is a situation causing heightened stress, or a significant change in a student's life, or if there are other situations that are getting in the way of a student's success, please meet with your school counselor. When a student or family hopes to access longer-term services, school counselors support students and their families/caregivers in accessing a higher level of service than school counselors provide.
