Middle School Math Acceleration Guide
Pathways to Accelerate in Math in Middle School
RAMP Pathway
The Rochester Accelerated Math Program (RAMP) provides middle school math recommendations (Math 6, Pre-Algebra, or Linear) for 5th-grade families based on multiple math scores. Families can opt out of the recommended placement or take an algebra-readiness assessment to explore further acceleration.
Screening Pathway
Rochester Public Schools universally screens all 5th graders for double math acceleration in 6th grade.
Students can double accelerate in math by earning a minimum of 7 out of 9 possible RAMP criteria points listed below or pass the Pre-Algebra Appeals Test with a score of at least 90%.
Fourth Grade MCA Reading 470 or higher OR Fifth Grade FastBridge Reading Scores of 80 NPR or higher OR Fourth Grade Verbal CogAT of 117 or higher = 1 point
Fourth Grade MCA Math of 470 or higher = 1 point
Fourth Grade CogAT: (Quantitative + Non-Verbal)
130 or higher = 4 points
125 or higher = 3 points
120 or higher = 2 points
115 or higher = 1 point
Fifth Grade FastBridge Math Scores:
90 NPR or higher = 3 points
80 NPR or higher= 2 points
70 NPR or higher = 1 point
NPR = National Percentile Rank
A complete list of your student's RPS test scores can be found in Skyward under Student Portfolio-> Report Test History
Interest/Request Pathway
Parents of students in grades 6-8, who express an interest or drive in learning advanced math, can pursue acceleration by submitting a Request to Test.
Qualification criteria: Students need to score 80% or higher in order to pass the assessment. Students can only take the assessment one time per math course.
Timeline: A request to test out of a math course should be made before October 15th for the current year and before April 15th for spring testing for the following school year.
What does the test cover? The test covers RPS Sequence and Content and Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Mathematics that correspond to the level of math the student is attempting to test out of.
How do students prepare? Some use RPS Math Concepts, CK-12, or Khan Academy
UMTYMP Pathway
Students who are very advanced in math and currently in grades 5-7 can take the UMTYMP Algebra Qualifying Exam to test into the University of Minnesota's Talented Youth in Mathematics Program. Students in grades 7-10 are able to test directly into the Calculus component, provided they have met the prerequisite courses. Visit the Math Center for Educational Program's website.
High School Acceleration
Once students are 9th graders, they will need to go through the Credit by Assessment process to accelerate. Testing opportunities happen two times per year (August and January). Learn more about Credit by Assessment online.
